Several Mississippi NICUs participated in the nationally recognized Kangaroo-A-Thon this
May, a two-week event encouraging neonatal units to log hours of Kangaroo Care, also known
as skin-to-skin holding.
What is Kangaroo Care?
Kangaroo Care involves holding a diapered baby against a parent’s bare chest. This nurturing
practice helps regulate the baby’s temperature, supports breastfeeding, and eases the
transition from womb to world. In NICU settings, it also provides comfort in an often
overstimulating environment, strengthening the bond between baby and caregiver.
We would like to recognize a few local hospitals that participated in the Kangaroo-A-Thon:
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, St. Dominic’s, North Mississippi Health Services, Merit Health River Oaks, and University of Mississippi Medical Center
